Later in the evening the noises from the lounge became louder. Above it all I heard Irena’s laughter. I imagined she was standing in the middle of the swirly carpet, throwing her head back and waving her arms about. I also heard Mamma’s steps going back and forth between the kitchen and the lounge, and sometimes Pappa’s too. In the background, I heard Nils Karlsson’s shy voice and his perfect Swedish accent. He sang the words as if he were one of the members of Abba.

A little later, I crept into the kitchen, which was empty and dark now. The food was still laid out on the round table, covered with bowls and kitchen towels. I took a plate from the cupboard and helped myself to some. I poured a glass of water and took it all back to my room. There was a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the hall. Everybody was laughing in the lounge, including Pappa and Mamma. Passing Anja’s room I heard music. She was singing along to it. I went into my room and put the plate of food on my bed. I crossed my legs and picked up my book. I looked out of the window at the tops of dark pine trees and felt very lonely. I wished we were in Tampere having a party at Saara’s place.
